Building Better Gas Chain Broilers

BPS Products, Inc., was incorporated in Ohio in 1986 in the heart of restaurant chain territory, and arguably, during the “Golden Age” of burger-focused restaurant growth. Founder and President James Paulin was past-president of the American Gas Association (AGA) and had been intimately involved with the design, testing and production of gas cooking equipment. Paulin saw the need for better, less expensive gas chain broiler and built one for a single local customer in a small rented warehouse.

Today, BPS boasts over 10,000 satisfied customers worldwide. Including major multi-unit operators with Hardee’s®, Carl’s Jr®, and Dairy Queen®. In fact, they recently expanded their manufacturing facility by 30 percent to over 15,000 square feet. While BPS remains focused solely on conveyor (a.k.a. chain) broilers and supporting hardware, their CHAR-MASTER™ Line includes models perfect for any operator that needs to prepare platters of wings, great steak or chicken sandwiches, and naturally, perfectly broiled burgers. BPS models are available with four or six burners, with a single chain or split chain, configured for flow through or return flow, and with or without an integrated bun-toasting platen. Return flow models deliver the cooked product to the same side raw product entered, requiring less hood and kitchen space. Split chain models have two conveyors, with individual speed controls and the ability to cook two different products simultaneously.

BPS employs high-efficiency infrared gas burners to do the cooking, a simple-pilot ignition system automatic temperature controls, and side panel burner access for easy cleaning and maintenance. BPS also addresses broiler effluent issues by offering a matching catalytic converter package capable of eliminating 90 percent of the smoke, while reducing gas costs by over 30 percent, keeping the kitchen cooler and reducing the need for ventilation system cleaning and those related costs.

BPS is an ENERY STAR® Partner even though there are currently no performance standards written for broilers. The BPS design team is currently working on a more fuel efficient and smaller chain broiler capable of delivering the same production rate as larger models. It appears their quest for better gas conveyor broilers continues to this day!
